From Aiguebelle to Eyguebelle
There were seven very pure springs flowing to the bottom
of a little valley at the place where the Cistercian community
decided to found their monastery in 1137. It was therefore
very natural for them to call the spot Aiguebelle: the
Belle Eau (best water) or Aqua Bella in Latin.
As Aiguebelle was the monastery's traditional name, the
community asked the purchasers of the distillery to change
the brand's spelling to avoid confusion. It was quite natural
that the Provencal root Eygue was selected to keep the
sound and to be a more direct reminder of its geographic
setting in Provencal Drôme (since Eygues is the equivalent
of the Provencal Aigues). This is how AIGUEBELLE became
EYGUEBELLE.
